George L. Bakris, MD, FAHA, FASN, is Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in Illinois. He received his MD from the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Frankin University of Medicine and Science and completed a residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, where he also did a research fellowship in physiology and biophysics. He then completed fellowships in nephrology and clinical pharmacology at the University of Chicago. From 1988 to 1991, he served as Director of Renal Research at the Ochsner Clinic and was a faculty member at the Tulane University School of Medicine.

Dr Bakris has had over 300 articles and book chapters published in the areas of kidney disease, hypertension, and progression of nephropathy. He is the Editor or Associate Editor of 3 books dealing with kidney disease, diabetes, and the role of hypertension titled The Kidney and Hypertension, Hypertension: a Clinician’s Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment, and Hypertension: Principles and Practice, and 1 textbook on cardiology titled International Textbook of Cardiology. He has served as the co-principal investigator of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) clinical research trial grant (K30) to train clinical researchers. He chaired the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) consensus report on blood pressure and its impact on renal disease progression. He has also served on many national committees, including the JNC 7 Executive and Writing Committee, the American Diabetes Association Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee, the NKF (K-DOQI) Blood Pressure Guideline Committee, the NKF (K-DOQI) Diabetes Guideline Committee, the JNC VI Writing Committee, and the NIH National High Blood Pressure Education Program Working Group on Hypertension and Renal Disease.

Dr Bakris has been an expert consultant to the Cardio-Renal Advisory Board of the FDA and past President of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology. He is the Editor of the American Journal of Nephrology and Associate Editor of the Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine and the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. He also serves on the editorial board of Nephrology, Dialysis & Transplantation, Hypertension, the Journal of Clinical Hypertension (Greenwich, Conn), and Kidney International, among others.
